Of course, I've been at work. But now all of us can get back on the job. I woke up to an e-mail with the official notice from OPM (Office of Personnel Management, the uber-Human Resources agency for all the federal workers):

Federal Government

Applies to: October 17, 2013
Status: Open

Open. Employees are expected to return for work on their next regularly scheduled work day (Thursday, October 17th for most employees), absent other instructions from their employing agencies.

Due to the enactment of a continuing resolution, Federal government operations are open. Employees are expected to return for work on their next regularly scheduled work day (Thursday, October 17th for most employees) ... .

What a huge relief!!!

chomiji: Hakkai from Saiyuki, in a hooded parka. Animated snowflakes fall; caption is A hazy shade of winter (Hakkai - snow)

It's snowing, big huge snowflakes that are only supposed to get thicker. The local press have dubbed the storm Snowquester, which looks to me like the name of a teenaged superhero who has a rocket-powered snowboard or something.

Of course they are riffing off the subject of the government funding sequester, which is another thing that DO NOT WANT. When you're part of the "company town" that is Washington DC (with the federal government as the company), things like this are more personal than political.

chomiji: Kitty does not understand! A kitten snarling, with the word 'wut?' as a caption (kitty - wut)

The good news was the my stress echocardiogram was fine and so was my blood pressure.

The bad news was that my work computer died on me at the end of the day, just before I could finish something that needed to be ready for my early-shift colleague in the morning.

I think this is what our Helpless Desk uses.

From here. Go play - have fun!
chomiji: Yumichika from Bleach, with the caption It's Showtime! - with a musical note (yumichika-showtime!)

... I can count the number of times I have done such a thing on the fingers of one hand.

(The occasion was a farewell for our student library assistant, who has been offered a decent job as a real Librarian despite the fact that she still has a semester to go on her MLS. And no, I'm not sure why I never end up going out for drinks. I just don't usually seem to work or hang out with going-out-for-drinks people.)

Fried Ham!

chomiji: Chibi of Muramasa from Samurai Deeper Kyo, holding a steamer full of food, with the caption Let's Eat! (Muramasa-Let's eat!)

Fried ham, fried ham, cheese and baloney,
And after the macaroni,
We'll have pickles, onions, and pretzels -
And then we'll have some more fried ham!
FRIED HAM FRIED HAM FRIED HA-AM !!!

    - traditional Scout camp ditty

So the Mr. celebrated Father's Day by going down to the farmer's market on his ownsome (I was glued to my work laptop, testing some systems that had to be successfully "failed over" to back-up in time for work tomorrow because of power system issues at the main data center) and coming back with fresh beefsteak tomatoes, basil, - and sugar-cured fresh ham. Which he proceeded to fry up and turn into panini-ish sandwiches of ham, cheese (cheddar for him, campo de montalban for me), tomatoe, and basil leaves. MMMMmM!

And in a marked contrast to events as reported (locked) last week, our reference librarian brought me a big serving of home-made chicken vegetable soup. With fresh dill! And parsnips! (I actually like parsnips.)

Her office shares a wall with mine - I guess my wracking cough has made a big impression – bless her.

Bats, Man!

My colleague Bob wrote tomorrow's intranet interest column about bats. (He usually likes to do nature subjects, which is fine with me!) Anyway, I was combing the Intarwebs for .gov/.edu photos that would be OK to use "for educational purposes" and found a marvelous page of photos of a couple of Big Brown Bat in flight, taken in a lab. The wings are just amazing in the way they flex to take the air as the bat maneuvers.

It's also kind of amazing that this "big" brown bat is actually such a teeny creature: here's a photo of a young girl being shown a Big Brown Bat, which is held in the naturalist's gloved hand ... it's so little and frail-looking.

Our agency is having a conference today, and apparently it's filled to capacity, if not actually SRO. And then, although the weather is not very spring-y today, it's apparent that the yearly spring school field trips to Our Nation's Capital have started. So when I went out to fetch lunch (I had a yen for curry today), I was dodging hoards of clueless people wearing name tags, all the way through our lobby, around Union Station, and down into the food court. People, don't stop dead at the bottoms or tops of the escalators, and please turn, look, and walk, instead of just turning 180° and charging off ... .

> sigh <

Well, it's Friday. And the curry was tasty.

Our IT specialist came by and gave my newer system more memory! w00t!

It's to be hoped that now, when I'm running the CMS, Outlook, and Photoshop at the same time, and the security scan kicks in automatically, my whole system won't grind to a halt - which it's been doing ever since I started using it in place of my sturdy old warhorse wot died of HD failure.

I'm outta here. I am so leaving early tomorrow ... I have dozens of packages to wrap, and clearly I'm not doing any tonight!

I had to stay "just a little past six" to double-check the effects of swapping to a new webserver, which we had been testing.

There was one thing we couldn't really test until it was in place. And that isn't working.

Sooooo ... they're still messing around with it. I am tired. And increasingly hungry. And oyceter has a thread going about comfort foods ... !!!!   > drool ... <

They're working on the playground again ... .

It's even worse than it sounds: my office is about 3 feet below the grade in the courtyard, so the jackhammering is right about at shoulder level when I'm sitting at my desk - about 8 feet behind me and through a single layer of safety glass.

The guy who's doing it isn't wearing any ear protection, either.

I'm sure that when the daycare center playground right outside my ground floor office window is completed and has cute little kidlets running about shrieking, I will find it (mostly) charming.

However, right now it's nothing but a buncha guys with large very noisy pneumatic devices putting together slides and bouncy things, and it's driving me totally nuts ... .

First, let me state without a blush that I am of the opinion that as an author, Cherryh on her worst day is better than the vast majority of science fiction authors at their best. I will also say, however, that I wish the Foreigner series was not so insanely popular. I like it, but I don't love it. I'd really rather see CJC Herself spend her time and energy on other projects, like the sequel to Cyteen that she has in the works, or perhaps seeing whether Compact Space (i.e., the Chanur books) is ready to offer up any more tales.

Still, I didn't expect to be so disappointed with Pretender. In Destroyer, the previous book, human translator/ambassador Bren Cameron had arrived back on the Atevi homeworld after a long, eventful space voyage to find that Tabini, his staunch ally (and also the grandson and father of his travelling companions, Ilisidi and Cajeiri), had been overthrown as leader of the powerful Western Association. Amid many adventures, Bren and his allies gained refuge in the ancient home of peppery, elderly Lord Tatiseigi. The current volume covers a very short span of time thereafter, as Bren and his allies suffer fallout from an internal battle for control of the powerful Assassin's Guild, gather themselves additional supporters (including Tabini, who reappears ... this is not a spoiler, it's in the cover blurb), and make a wild cross-country dash to Shejidan, the capital, where Tabini is to re-convene the governing body of the Alliance and Bren will give his report on what he found Out There.

That's not a lot of action. It's certainly not enough for a book of this length (404 pp. of moderately large type). And so we get page after page of Bren worrying. And rehashing. And speculating. And going through things in his mind in extreme detail, to make sure that we understand what's going on, I guess. I found myself skimming huge chunks of book, desperately searching for dialog or action - both of which, I must say, are wonderful when they finally show up. But there isn't enough of either to sustain the whole. This reads all too much like the second half of Destroyer - and indeed, the back cover blurb really covers both books!

Read on - includes a few minor spoilers )

On an equally crabby note, I have decided to hate Visio. It keeps connecting org chart boxes where I don't want it to connect org chart boxes. I have never used such an out-of-control product, and I am perfectly comfy with things like Corel Draw, Photoshop, and PowerPoint, among other things, thank you. This program is possessed!!

I've been re-reading the Lymond Chronicles, that huge, superb six-volume historical adventure epic by Dorothy Dunnett. I hadn't re-read it for several years, and besides, I've persuaded Sanada to take a crack at it as well, so I decided to keep her company on the long trip.

I'd thought of writing a post about my favorite scenes in each book, and I may yet do that. But I'm having an odd problem with the last volume, Checkmate .

Here's the situation - may include mild spoilers, though I'll try to avoid them ... )

So first off we have the ever-popular ...

Signs of Spring

I like spring. Spring works for me. Everything progresses. Things grow and bloom. Birds sing (and sometimes beat each others' brains out - boys!   > rolls eyes <) The days get longer (very important!).

On Saturday the weather was wonderful, soft and warmish, with that great after-a-rain feel, and we had a lovely row of little purple crocus growing along the side of the house.

The yesterday and today - meh. Cold again, and they're calling for snow on Wednesday.

But your days are numbered, Old Man Winter! Saw the writing on the wall this weekend, din'tcha? Nya hah hah!

Next up,

A Certain Sign (Symbol) in Saiyuki Reload

I'm going to be good and use LJ Cut in case this would be a spoiler for anyone. It's Saiyuki Reload vol. 4.

So here's the deal ... )

I shall not mention the Content Mismanagement System at all except to point out that it apparently retained too much memory this morning and had to be restarted. Let this be a warning to all of us ... keep your systems regular, folks ... wonder what the equivalent of oat bran is for a Solaris system?
